What this solves

Most Abu Simbel guides give you three options and stop. They don't tell you:

How to read the result

The three options are scored on five dimensions: total cost (EGP + USD), total day fatigue, photo-timing quality, schedule flexibility, and risk of cancellation. The result shows the ranking plus a single trade-off passage per option. The reference rate (~50 EGP/USD) is stamped below.

Bus convoy reality. Departure is 03:00?4:00 from your Aswan hotel. Police escort, ~4 hours each way, with a single rest point. Total day length: 11?3 hours. Cost: 300?50 EGP per person one-way, plus 240 EGP entry fee. The convoy is the cheapest but the worst on fatigue.

Cairo flight reality. Round-trip Cairo–Abu Simbel runs 7,000?2,000 EGP on EgyptAir or Nesma. Plus a Cairo hotel night and the cost of getting to Cairo. Total day-on-site is 2? hours after you deduct the airport time.

Aswan flight reality. 45-minute flight, ~3,500?,000 EGP one-way. You get a half-day on site and a same-day return. Best balance of cost vs fatigue for most travellers.

Limitations

FAQ

How bad is the 3 AM bus convoy really?

12+ hours total including the drive, the 90-min on-site visit, and the return. The seats are coach-class ?not luxury. You'll be functional the next day but slower. If you have only 2 nights in Aswan, the bus kills day 2.

Can I see the sun alignment as a walk-up?

No. The ~150 tickets per alignment date sell out weeks in advance via the official site. If your dates are flexible, plan months ahead.

Is the Aswan flight worth the extra cost?

For most independent travellers, yes. You save 8+ hours and arrive fresh. The premium over the convoy is typically 3,000?,500 EGP per person.

What if my flight gets cancelled?

Build a 24-hour buffer in your Aswan plan. If you have 3+ nights, a cancelled Aswan–Abu Simbel flight can usually be rebooked the next day. If you have 1 night, the convoy is your fallback ?it's never cancelled.

About this tool

What it is. A scoring tool for the three real ways to reach Abu Simbel: convoy bus, fly Cairo, fly Aswan. Inputs are budget, departure city, sleep sensitivity, and photo priority. Output is a ranked comparison with EGP and USD totals.

Who it's for. Travellers in Cairo or Aswan deciding how to spend a single day on Abu Simbel. Useful for budget-conscious backpackers and time-pressed independent travellers alike.

What it isn't. Not a flight-booking tool. Not a substitute for confirming the convoy schedule at your hotel. Not a guarantee against khamsin cancellations.

Limitations. Flight prices fluctuate by date; the figures assume mid-week. Convoy rates are stable but per-operator. Treat as a planning estimate.
