Alcohol Availability by Region

Alcohol in Egypt is legal, regulated, and unevenly available. Hotel bars and restaurants in tourist zones serve freely. Outside those, the rules shift by governorate. This tool tells you where you'll find a drink and where you won't.

What this solves

Most Egypt guides cover "alcohol is available" or "alcohol is forbidden" in one sentence. The truth is regional and channel-specific:

How to read the result

The picker returns the availability profile for your governorate (hotel bars, restaurants, supermarket) and the price range for a typical beer, glass of wine, or spirit+mixer. It flags any governorate-specific restrictions.

Three channels. Hotel (always works), Restaurant (works in tourist zones, varies elsewhere), Supermarket (the most variable; some governorates have no full-time bottle shop).

Local brands. Egyptian beer is Stella (lager) and Sakara. Egyptian wine is mostly from Gianaclis / Omar Khayyam. Imported spirits are available at hotel bars and large supermarkets.

Limitations

FAQ

Can I drink in public?

No. Public drinking is illegal and socially unacceptable. Drink only at licensed bars and restaurants, or in your hotel room.

Is there a duty-free allowance?

2L of alcohol per adult at Cairo Airport arrival duty-free. If you exceed, you pay 200–300% duty on the rest.

Are there Egyptian wines worth trying?

Yes. Gianaclis (owned by an Egyptian conglomerate) makes Omar Khayyam, Rubis d'Egypte, and others. The Marquis de Beaubois is a rosé popular at Cairo's nicer restaurants. Quality has improved markedly in the past 10 years.

What about Nile cruises?

Nile cruise boats always serve alcohol onboard; some include it in the rate, others charge per drink. The boat acts as a "licensed venue" once underway.
