Pyramid Compass › Money & Practical
Egypt ATMs look like a uniform option, but the fee stack varies dramatically by bank pair, withdrawal size, and currency. Some ATMs charge a flat 30 EGP surcharge; others charge 1.5–2.5% above mid-market. This calculator shows your real cost for each combination and gives an optimal withdrawal strategy.
Spread over your trip — typically 1 per ~3 days.
Run the calculator to see fee comparisons.
The hidden fees in Egypt ATM withdrawals come in four layers that stack:
Each row shows one ATM scenario: the Egyptian bank, the foreign-card surcharge, and the effective rate you'd pay per EGP. The "best" row is highlighted; the "worst" row is flagged. The matrix uses your entered withdrawal amount and home bank region.
The strategy box at the bottom tells you whether to make few-large withdrawals or many-small ones. As a rule of thumb, fewer-large wins because the foreign-card surcharge is flat — but Egyptian banks have per-transaction limits (NBE 4000 EGP, CIB 6000 EGP, HSBC 15000 EGP).
City-level differences: Cairo has the most ATMs and the lowest surcharges. Luxor and Aswan have fewer ATMs and more "convenience fee" charges. Hurghada/Sharm have resort-area ATMs with marked-up rates.
NBE (National Bank of Egypt) typically charges 30 EGP flat — the lowest. Banque Misr and CIB charge 40–50 EGP but allow higher per-tx limits. Avoid QNB and AAIB in tourist zones — they sometimes add an extra "convenience" markup.
Fewer-large is almost always better because the foreign-card surcharge is fixed. Withdraw the maximum per transaction (4000–6000 EGP) once per 2–3 days. Multiple small withdrawals = multiple flat fees for the same money.
Yes — Revolut Standard/Plus charge 0% FX markup on weekdays (1% on weekends after free quota). Wise charges ~0.4% on top of mid-market. N26 charges 1.7%. These beat traditional bank cards (3%+) by 1.5–3%. The catch: Revolut and Wise may flag Egypt as a high-fraud country and freeze cards; carry a backup.
Yes — bank-branch ATMs inside the lobby (not freestanding on the street) are safer. Avoid standalone ATMs in souqs and at gas stations. Card skimmers exist but are rare at major bank branches. Cover the PIN pad with your hand.
