Pyramid Compass › Cairo & Transport
Two museums, both with Tut, both with mummies, but with completely different day logistics. This tool picks the right one based on your hotel zone, your top interest, and how many days you have in Cairo.
Run the tool to see the pick.
The two Cairo museums are 14 km apart. The choice isn't about quality ?both are world-class. It's about:
Each museum is scored 0?0 on four dimensions: collection match to your interest, transit ease from your zone, photo/atmosphere, and crowd flow. The result returns one of three picks: GEM only, Tahrir only, or both (split day). Reference rate ~50 EGP/USD.
GEM entry is currently ~500 EGP per the partial-opening tier (Oct 2026). Tahrir is ~300 EGP. Combined split-day ticket doesn't exist ?buy two tickets if you visit both.
What's unique to each. Tahrir has the Amarna room (Akhenaten's weird-statue revolution) and the wooden sarcophagi, plus the historic 1902 Beaux-Arts building itself. GEM has Tut's full ~3,500-item collection under one roof and royal-mummy halls.
The main halls are open; the children's museum and some speciality galleries may still be by-appointment. The Tut collection has been progressively moved from Tahrir to GEM since the partial opening. Treat any "all halls" claim as optimistic until the gate confirms.
A focused 2 hours hits the highlights: ground-floor Tut, the royal-mummy room, the upper-floor sculpture halls. A full visit is 4? hours.
GEM has the children's museum and more space; recommended for under-12s. Tahrir is denser but more intimidating.
Tahrir: the Beaux-Arts staircase and the upper-floor atrium. GEM: the Great Hall atrium (Pyramid of Menkaure visible through 60m glass facade) and the Tut galleries.

What it is. A scoring tool for the GEM-vs-Tahrir question. Inputs are hotel zone, top interest, days in Cairo, and mobility preference. Output is one of three picks plus transit time, cost, and what's unique to each.
Who it's for. Independent Cairo visitors with 1? days deciding which museum to allocate to. Useful for first-timers who feel they have to "do both" and want to know if a focused single-museum visit is the right call.
What it isn't. Not a substitute for confirming GEM hall openings on the day. Not a substitute for buying tickets in advance for special exhibits.
Limitations. Opening tiers change; treat the figures as a planning estimate.
