Camel rides in Egypt range from a 10-minute photo stop (overpriced) to a multi-day Bedouin expedition. This planner matches your location, duration, and group to the right option and what it should cost.

Most travel guides lump cameras as one "camel ride" category. There are actually three distinct markets:
The welfare flag is unique: in Egypt, most operators are unregulated. A small but growing number of Sinai / Aswan operations are audited by welfare NGOs and use working but not overworked animals.
The planner picks the right kind of ride for your location and duration. Photo-loop rides are at Luxor West Bank (the standard tourist camel photo), Aswan Elephantine (botanical islet felucca-camel), and Sinai (St. Catherine's en route to Mount Sinai). Bedouin treks are Sinai / Aswan.
Pace. A walking camel covers roughly 3 km/hr. A Bedouin-led camel caravan in the Sinai moves at 2.5–3.5 km/hr with breaks. Multi-day treks do 15–25 km per day depending on terrain.
Negotiation rule. For rides that quote a "per camel" cost (most of Egypt), you are renting the animal for the slot. Solo travellers sometimes pay for two seats (one person + one handler). Groups split per-camel cost and ride two per camel.
Generally yes, with caveats. Camels are large and the fall is real (1.7m at the hump, 1.4m at the head). For short rides, hold the saddle horn and lean with the camel's gait. For multi-day treks, listen to the handler. If the camel becomes agitated (heavy breathing, refusal to move), dismount.
Look for: working weight (not underfed), no visible saddle sores, normal gait (no limp), willing to stand. Avoid: very young camels (less than 4–5 years), very old ones (visible worn teeth, sagging back), pregnant females. In the Sinai, ask about the "Sinai Trail" or "Tribe" collective — they're audited.
In Sinai, yes — via Jabal Sabra or similar Bedouin-led collectives. In Luxor / Aswan, the camel market is more commercial; operators like Caravans Egypt broker, with welfare protocols. Direct family booking outside Sinai is rare.
October to April. December and February can be icy-cold at night (-5°C); March and May bring khamsin. June to August is too hot for overnight camping in the desert. October and November are the most reliable months.

What it is. A small JavaScript planner for camel treks in Egypt — picks the right ride type for your location, duration, group, and welfare priority.
Who it's for. Independent travellers booking their own camel experience rather than a package-included ride.
What it isn't. Not a substitute for current operator quotes. Not a substitute for inspecting the camel before mounting.
Limitations. The welfare flag is binary — the real spectrum is finer. Always inspect the camel and refuse obviously unfit animals.
