Pyramid Compass › Culture & Climate
Egypt spans the Mediterranean coast, the Nile Valley, and the deep desert — the climate varies by region. This tool returns the heat index, sandstorm risk, crowd level, and recommendation for your month and region.
Run the picker to see the result.
High-level summary. The picker above gives the detailed verdict for your chosen month and region.
| Month | Cairo | Luxor | Aswan | Sinai | Red Sea | W. Desert |
|---|
Generic "best time to visit Egypt" pages give a one-line answer (October + March). The truth is more nuanced:
The picker returns three things for your month and region: the heat index (cold, mild, hot, extreme), the khamsin (sandstorm) probability, and the crowd level. The recommendation is visit / caution / avoid.
Clothes rule. Even in winter, bring a wind-resistant jacket for the desert at night. In summer, bring loose-fitting long sleeves for sun protection. Closed shoes for desert (sand + scorpions).
Best overall window. October to March. December and February can be too cold for desert nights; March to May brings khamsin. June to August is too hot for most inland travel; Red Sea coast is the refuge.
June through August. Luxor and Aswan hit 40–45°C+ midday. Sightseeing before 9 AM and after 16:00 only. Most packages shift to Red Sea coast in summer.
March through May, with peak in April. About 12–15 storms per season; each lasts 1–3 days. Storms blow from the south and drop visibility to a few hundred meters.
Yes, except for Western Desert nights. Cairo is 18–22°C days, 8–12°C nights. Luxor is 23–26°C days, 7–10°C nights. Sinai can be 5°C at night. Desert oases can drop below 0°C at night.
Christmas + New Year (Dec 20 – Jan 5), Easter (variable), and Chinese New Year (Feb) for Chinese group tours. Avoid if you want quiet — prices spike, sites are jammed.

What it is. A small JavaScript climate-window picker that returns the heat index, khamsin risk, crowd level, and recommendation for your chosen month and region in Egypt.
Who it's for. Independent travellers deciding when and where to visit Egypt.
What it isn't. Not a substitute for current weather forecasts. Not a substitute for the Egyptian Meteorological Authority's storm warnings.
Limitations. Figures are monthly averages based on 2014–2024 data. Individual days deviate. Climate trends are shifting hotter summers.
