Pyramid Compass › Nile & Cruise
For any Nile crossing in Aswan or Luxor you'll choose between a traditional sailboat (felucca) and a motor launch. They look similar from the dock but cost, time, comfort, and safety all differ.
Run the tool to see the pick.
The dock at Aswan looks like every boat is a felucca. Many are not. Some boats have a single tiny sail for show and a 40-horsepower outboard doing the actual work. The decision matrix that matters:
The tool returns one of three decisions: felucca, motor launch, or either, depends. The decision is built from your trip length, time of day, wind, and budget. Reference rate ~50 EGP/USD.
When felucca wins. Calm to moderate wind, 1? hour trip, sunrise or sunset, budget-conscious group of 2?. The ride is slower but atmospheric.
When motor wins. Short trip, midday heat, strong wind, large group, time-sensitive itinerary. Motor is reliable but utilitarian.
The orange-bib check. Look at the bow. If you see a bright orange bib hanging from the bow hook with a license number ?the boat is registered with the Aswan/Luxor boatmen's union and the captain has passed safety checks. If there's no bib, the boat is unlicensed and uninsured. Walk away.
Yes. The Aswan and Luxor unions issue numbered bibs; the captain's name, ID, and boat ID are on it. Unlicensed boats have no insurance if something goes wrong. It's a 30-second check before you hand over money.
Yes if you want the iconic Aswan silhouette. No if you want peace ?there are 30+ boats in the queue. For solitude, do a sunrise felucca from a quieter dock.
Aswan: 150?50 EGP per boat for an hour. Luxor: 200?00 EGP per boat for an hour. Per-person above. Negotiate before boarding; tipping the captain 50?00 EGP on top is appropriate.
Yes ?they're stable, sit low in the water, and rarely capsize. The bigger risk is unlicensed operators. Always check the bib.

What it is. A felucca-vs-motor decision tool for any Nile crossing. Inputs are trip length, time of day, wind, budget, and group size. Output is one boat type, a price range in EGP and USD, and a license-check reminder.
Who it's for. Visitors to Aswan or Luxor trying to decide which boat to hire for a crossing or a sunset ride. Useful for visitors who haven't realised feluccas are licensed and motor launches aren't always.
What it isn't. Not a substitute for reading the boat's bib before boarding. Not a substitute for agreeing price before sailing.
Limitations. Pricing is informal and negotiable. Treat the figures as a baseline.
