"Dress modestly in Egypt" is the standard advice — and useless, because modesty rules differ sharply by region. A bikini is fine at a Sharm resort pool but will get you stopped at Luxor Temple. This tool gives a coverage score (0–100), a recommended outfit summary, and the rules of thumb for mosques, souqs, and beach resorts.
Run the calculator to see the recommended outfit.
Generic guides tell women to cover shoulders and knees. That's a baseline, not the whole picture. The actual variation:
The calculator returns a coverage score (0–100, where 100 = fully covered including head), an outfit summary, and a "what gets harassed" warning specific to the region and activity.
The coverage score isn't about modesty for its own sake — it's a proxy for unwanted attention. Below 70, expect stares and the occasional comment in conservative regions. Below 50, expect confrontation.
The Ramadan toggle is important: social conservatism tightens during the fasting month even in liberal areas. Shorts in Cairo become more noticed. Modesty scores of 70+ are appropriate everywhere during Ramadan.
No — only inside mosques. Outside, a headscarf is optional in Cairo and resort zones, but appreciated in Upper Egypt and oases. Carrying a light scarf in your bag costs nothing and covers you anywhere.
At a fenced resort pool or beach, yes. Outside the resort fence (city beach, public area), no. Hurghada's public beaches and the Marina are mixed; bring a cover-up to walk between areas. Marsa Alam is mostly resort-only — bikinis fine inside.
Pants are fine everywhere; in fact, loose linen pants are the easiest outfit to pack. Skirts are okay if ankle-length. Above-the-knee skirts and shorts are not appropriate in mosques, Coptic areas, or Upper Egypt.
In tourist areas of Cairo, Hurghada, Sharm: yes, mostly fine. In Luxor/Aswan, mosques, and Coptic sites: no — bring a shawl or scarf. The standard traveler outfit is a short-sleeved or 3/4-sleeved top with a pashmina in the bag.
