Photography Permission Decision Tree

Photography in Egypt is a layered minefield: military zones are off-limits, some tombs charge extra for photos, museum flash is forbidden, and bridges are sometimes OK from outside but not inside. This tool classifies your subject into one of four categories — allowed, conditional, no, or danger — and gives safe framing tips.

What this solves

"Be careful with the camera in Egypt" is unhelpful. The actual rules have layers:

How to read the result

The decision tree returns one of four tags: ALLOWED (free to shoot), CONDITIONAL (allowed with caveats — extra ticket, no flash, no people), NO (refused at the door), or DANGER (legal risk, possible detention). Each tag has a specific safe-framing tip.

The camera type modifies the decision. A phone is more discreet and rarely scrutinized for prohibited subjects — but a mirrorless or DSLR with a long lens is noticed. Drones are essentially forbidden. Video cameras attract more attention than phones.

The location slider captures regional variation: Sinai is more permissive than Cairo; oases are the strictest; Luxor/Aswan fall in the middle.

Limitations

FAQ

Can I photograph the pyramids?

Yes — exterior photos from public areas are fine. Drones are forbidden. From the Panorama Point, all three pyramids can be photographed. Sunset photos are unrestricted. Interior of the Great Pyramid: photography is technically forbidden, but enforcement is inconsistent — most visitors take phone photos inside.

Which tombs are absolutely photo-forbidden?

Seti I (KV17), Tutankhamun (KV62), and Nefertari (QV66) tombs in the Valley of the Kings are photo-free. Guards at Seti I will physically confiscate tripods and phones. The other 8–10 open tombs allow photos for a 300–500 EGP photo ticket bought at the visitor center.

Is it safe to photograph people in Egypt?

Most of the time, yes — but always ask first (a hand gesture + smile works). In conservative areas (Upper Egypt, oases, some religious neighborhoods), photographing women without permission can lead to confrontation. Vendors sometimes demand baksheesh if you photograph their stall — pay or don't.

Can I fly a drone?

Realistically, no. Civilian drones are banned at all tourist sites and around Cairo. Permits are issued only through the Ministry of Defense for pre-approved commercial projects and are not granted to tourists. Possession of an unpermitted drone can mean confiscation and a fine.
