Mount Sinai Climb Timing

The hour you start the climb determines whether you make sunrise, freeze at the summit, or finish mid-day heat. This tool picks the start time, path (750-step staircase vs camel-back), and cost for your month, fitness, and group.

What this solves

Generic "climb Mount Sinai" guides skip three Egypt-specific decisions:

How to read the result

The planner returns the recommended start time, climb duration estimate, and per-person cost (guide fee + optional camel) given your month and fitness. The standard is a 3 AM start in winter for sunrise, or 2:30 AM in summer (so you finish before the 6 AM dawn that comes earlier in warm months).

Path selection. The 750-step Path of Repentance (the Sikket Sayidna Mousa) is paved and has handrails — safer in winter ice and summer heat. The camel path (El Sikket El Bashait) is gentle gravel slope and is where camel rides happen. Most guides book the staircase; the camel is for partial ascent.

Cost math. Guide fee is mandatory (300–500 EGP per group). Camel is per seat, per leg (500–800 EGP up, same again down if you want a ride down). Solo travellers pay full camel and guide; groups split.

Limitations

FAQ

Do I need a guide?

In practice yes. The Bedouin community at St. Catherine's manages the climb. You pay a guide fee (300–500 EGP per group, not per person). The guide handles the gate, the camel (if used), and ensures you do not descend alone at night.

What is the camel "cheating" warning?

Riding a camel up is fine. Riding a camel down is also fine if you pay the full fee at the top. Some operators pressure you at the top to pay more. Always agree the full price (up + down) before the climb.

How cold does the summit get?

In winter (Dec–Feb), -5°C to 5°C at sunrise. The wind makes it feel colder. You need a winter jacket, hat, gloves. In summer (Jun–Aug), 15–25°C at sunrise, no jacket needed.

Can I visit St. Catherine's Monastery on the way?

Yes if your schedule lines up with 9:00–12:00 opening. Closed Fridays and most major Orthodox feast days. The monastery has the Burning Bush and an ancient icon collection; the visit takes 45–90 minutes.

About this tool

What it is. A small JavaScript decision tool that picks the start time, path, and cost for the Mount Sinai climb given your month, fitness, group size, and goals.

Who it's for. Independent travellers climbing Mount Sinai (Jebel Musa) from St. Catherine's town.

What it isn't. Not a substitute for the guide at the start of the climb. Not a substitute for the monastery's calendar.

Limitations. Sunrise vs day climb trade-off depends on personal goals; the tool recommends sunrise by default. Always confirm guide fee in writing.
