Tea & Coffee Translator

Egypt's coffee shop scene is a world of shai, ahwa, karkadeh, and helba. Each has a transliteration, a default sugar level, and a price range. This tool helps you order what you actually want, including how to ask for less sugar.

What you want

Egyptian shai and ahwa default to ~2 spoons per cup. "Less sugar" means ask for 1 spoon; "no sugar" means ask for 0.

How to order

Run the picker to see the order.

What this solves

Generic "Egypt food" pages cover koshary and fuul. Tea and coffee culture is just as deep, and is the actual social fabric:

How to read the result

The picker returns the Arabic transliteration, the literal meaning, what to expect when it arrives, and the price in EGP. It also shows how to ask for less sugar.

The sugar problem. Default Egyptian shai and ahwa are heavily sugared (~2 spoons per small cup). If you want less, say "bidun sokar kteer" (without much sugar) or "la sokar" (no sugar). The staff will adjust.

The cost. An ahwa shai is 5–15 EGP. A hotel tea is 60–120 EGP. A karkadeh in a tourist area is 30–50 EGP; in a local ahwa it's 15–25 EGP.

Limitations

FAQ

Is Egyptian coffee the same as Turkish?

Close but not identical. Egyptian coffee (ahwa) is generally lighter and often flavored with cardamom or hawayej (a spice mix). Turkish coffee (qahwa Turki) is heavier, boiled, served unfiltered with grounds in the bottom.

What is the yellow drink?

Helba (fenugreek). It's a hot, slightly bitter drink. Often served at breakfast; the flavor is unusual but warming. Most ahwas serve it in winter.

What is karkadeh and is it caffeinated?

Karkadeh is hibiscus tea, served cold and red. No caffeine. It's the standard summer drink; the taste is tart. Add sugar if you want.

Can I drink the tap water with the tea?

The tea itself is fine — it's boiled water. The ice in cold drinks may be from tap water; most ahwas use filtered ice. Hotels use filtered ice reliably.
