Pyramid Compass › Money & Practical
Egypt tipping doesn't end at the hotel desk. It's a cascade: hotel housekeeping, restaurant waiter, taxi driver, bathroom attendant, bell desk, museum guard, parking attendant, room service, the guy who held your camel. This calculator maps the cascade line by line, gives you a per-day tipping total, and shows the cumulative bill so it doesn't blindside you on day 7.
Run the calculator to see the cascade.
The "tipping in Egypt" question is rarely answered with a single number. The cascade has 15+ line items, some structural (you have to tip them or the next guest won't get service), some optional, some tied to specific moments. The trick is mapping the order so you don't double-tip and don't miss the structural ones.
The calculator returns a per-day tipping total, a total trip budget, and the cascade broken into line items. The order matters: each row shows the moment in the day you'd typically tip (start, during, end). Total = sum of all rows × trip days, adjusted for hotel and trip tier.
The "skipped" line items are intentional — they're optional and tier-dependent. You don't need to tip every interaction. The calculator makes those choices transparent.
For cruise tipping, the calculator uses the industry-standard envelope system: cruise director at end of trip, cabin crew daily in your cabin, restaurant waiter daily at breakfast/lunch/dinner, bartender at end of trip. Cruise crew baksheesh can run 5–10% of the cruise cost.
Yes for 3-star. For 5-star, 100 EGP is more appropriate. Leave it on the pillow or desk at end of day, not on the bathroom counter. Mark the envelope (or fold the bills) so it's clear it's a tip and not a misplaced bill.
Standard: 100 EGP/night for the cabin crew, 50 EGP/night for the waiter (or pooled and given on last night), 100 EGP/night for the guide if one is on board. End-of-trip envelope for the captain: 300–500 EGP. Cruise director: 200–400 EGP. Total for a 5-night cruise: 2,000–3,000 EGP per person.
You can adjust downward — 5–10 EGP instead of 50 — but tipping zero is unusual and may affect how you're treated next time. Egypt's service economy is built on baksheesh, and the people on the receiving end are rarely the source of the problem. Talk to the manager; tip the staff anyway.
This is one of the most ethically contested tips in Egypt. Some travelers refuse on principle (it enables corruption); others tip to keep the day smooth. The calculator lists it as optional at 50 EGP/photo. Decide before the moment; it's awkward to negotiate on the spot.
