Pyramid Compass › Desert & Adventure
The Western Desert's routes range from paved Bahariya day-trips to multi-week Gilf Kebir and Great Sand Sea expeditions. The tool scores your route on a 1–5 difficulty scale and lists the permits, guide credentials, and vehicle age you should check before booking.
Run the estimator to see the rating.
Generic "Western Desert" pages treat all routes as one. They are not:
The tool flags the SCA guide-license badge and the military permit. Without these, your trip is not legal.
The estimator scores 1–5 (5 is extreme). 1 means a Bahariya day-trip on paved road. 5 means a Great Sand Sea dune-crossing or a Gilf expedition. The score rises if your guide is unlicensed, your vehicle is over 7 years, or your group is solo (no backup vehicle).
Permits. For Bahariya-Farafra-Dakhla, the SCA gate permit covers the route (free with your site entry ticket). For Gilf, Uweinat, and Uger Sea, you need a military permit in addition; most operators arrange this.
Vehicle age. Most operators run Toyota Land Cruisers (the desert dunes a thing and the standard vehicle). Older models (10+ years) have tired replacement suspension; vehicle age 4+ matters most on sand routes.
Yes, but only with the right operator and permits. The plateau has prehistoric rock art (the "Cave of Swimmers" discovered by László Almásy) and is one of the most remote places in Egypt. 10–14 days, 3 vehicles per party, military permit.
No. The Western Desert military-controlled areas require a licensed Egyptian driver/guide with a permit. Self-drive is not legal even if you rent in Cairo. Most insurance policies also void in the deep desert.
Every SCA-licensed guide carries an ID card with a Ministry-issued photo and license number. Ask to see it before booking; reputable operators display it on their team page. If they cannot produce one, book a different one.
They happen. Most common: getting stuck in sand and walking out without supply. The tool's group-size warning is the most important rule — for the deep desert, minimum 2 vehicles. Solo crossings require satellite-phone backup and recovery insurance, which is rare.

What it is. A small JavaScript difficulty estimator for Western Desert 4x4 routes. Scores your route on a 1–5 scale and lists the permits, guide credentials, and vehicle requirements.
Who it's for. Independent travellers booking their own Western Desert 4x4 trip — Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla, Gilf Kebir, Great Sand Sea, or Uger Sea to Siwa.
What it isn't. Not a substitute for current operator quotes or current permit rules. Not a substitute for experienced drivers.
Limitations. The 1–5 score aggregates terrain, permits, vehicle risk, and group risk. Real safety depends on operator experience and current conditions.
