Pyramid Compass › Desert & Adventure
Pick the right tour length from Cairo to the White Desert (Bahariya / Farafra / Dakhla). The choice is mostly about how many days you can spare and whether you want the chalk mushroom formations at sunrise or a multi-oasis crawl.
Round-trip from Cairo to Bahariya alone is 9–10h driving each way. 1-day is grueling.
Earlier = cooler at the chalk formations; later = you arrive after the photo window.

Most guide pages describe the White Desert. Almost none help you choose between the three standard operator packages:
The tool also flags the gate permit — Black + White Desert requires an SCA permit at the gate (free with ticket, but the photo stop depends on whether it has been issued).
The tool picks one of three standard options (1-day, 2-day, 3-day) based on the days available. Within that option, it adjusts the cost for your group size (4x4 is usually Toyota Land Cruiser 6–8 seats, charged per vehicle) and adds a photography note based on whether golden hour is a priority.
Cost math. Operator quotes are per-person but the 4x4 itself is what they charge for. Solo travellers effectively pay the whole vehicle because operators rarely single-share solo. Two-person splits the cost most efficiently. Eight is the max fill.
Permits. White + Black Desert are inside the SCA-protected zone. The ticket you buy in Bahariya covers you; the operator should stamp your permit at the gate. If you are heading further to Farafra / Dakhla / Gilf Kebir, additional military permits are needed and most operators include them.
It can be, but it is borderline masochistic. The Cairo-Bahariya drive is 4–5 hours each way. You arrive with about 2 hours on the chalk ground. A 2-day is twice the photo content at half the fatigue.
Either a Bedouin-style camp in the desert (mattress on sand, communal fire, basic shower in a tent — included in most quotes) or a budget hotel in Bahariya town (about 500–800 EGP/night extra). The camp is the experience.
In theory yes, but practically no. The White Desert is unmarked, the tracks vanish in wind, and the gate permit / military checks require a licensed vehicle with a guide. Independent travellers book a 4x4 with a driver for the day and skip the operator's overnight package.
October to March. December and February can drop below freezing at night — bring a real sleeping bag. March to May brings khamsin. June to August is too hot for overnight camping.

What it is. A small JavaScript decision tool that picks the right tour length for your days, budget, group size and photography interest for the Western Desert's White Desert National Park.
Who it's for. Independent travellers booking their own Cairo-based desert trip. Not for package tourists with a tour manager booking for them.
What it isn't. Not a substitute for current operator quotes. Not a substitute for confirming khamsin conditions 24 hours before departure.
Limitations. Operator pricing moves with fuel and season. The figures are the operator-direct range; Cairo-based agencies mark up. Always get a written quote and verify what is included (camping gear, meals, permits, fuel).
